Statue of Daun Penh: Exploring Phnom Penh’s Legendary Founder
Honor Cambodia’s capital origins at the Statue of Daun Penh, a quiet riverside monument tied to the city’s founding…
A candid look at this remote Cambodian viewpoint that has surrendered to vegetation, plus realistic advice for reaching it.
Dam Viewpoint sits on a low ridge in southern Cambodia near the coordinates 10.5003411, 104.3052701. Once intended to offer panoramas over surrounding farmland and distant hills, the platform is now largely swallowed by dense secondary growth. Tall grasses, vines, and young trees block most sightlines, leaving only occasional glimpses through gaps in the canopy. The experience is therefore one of quiet rural exploration rather than sweeping views.
Access is via narrow laterite roads branching from Route 3 or local tracks near the town of Kampot. Drivers should use a sturdy motorbike or 4×4 during the dry season; the surface becomes slippery and rutted after rain. From Kampot market, the final stretch takes roughly 45 minutes. No signage marks the turnoff, so travelers often ask villagers for the “viewpoint dam” or rely on offline maps. Parking is informal at the base of a short footpath that climbs through scrub.
The clearest months are December through March when vegetation is slightly thinner and trails are passable. Even then, expect limited visibility. The rainy season turns paths into mud and encourages faster regrowth, making the site even less rewarding. Early morning visits reduce heat and insect activity.
The short climb ends at a crumbling concrete platform surrounded by chest-high foliage. A rusted railing remains in places, but the structure is unstable. Visitors usually spend 10–15 minutes clearing a small gap with hands or a stick for a partial photo before retreating. There are no facilities, benches, or interpretive signs. The surrounding area is working farmland; respect private property and avoid trampling crops.
Most travelers find these destinations deliver the scenery missing at Dam Viewpoint and make a more satisfying half-day outing.

Very little. Vegetation has overgrown the platform, leaving only narrow sightlines through the trees.
The path is short but uneven and can be slippery. The concrete platform itself is crumbling, so step carefully and do not lean on railings.
None. There is no ticket booth, toilet, or vendor at the site.
A high-clearance vehicle is preferable. Standard sedans may struggle on the last unpaved section, especially after rain.
Continue to Kep or Kampot for reliable coastal and river views; both are within an houru2019s drive.
