Why Visit Daga Chhu Bridge
The Daga Chhu Bridge carries the main southern highway across a wide, fast-flowing river in Bhutan’s Dagana district. Travelers stop here for the unobstructed views of terraced hillsides, dense forests, and distant Himalayan ridges. Unlike busier northern crossings, the site remains peaceful, giving visitors a genuine sense of Bhutan’s rural landscape.
What to See and Do
Walk the pedestrian walkway alongside the roadway to feel the river breeze and watch for kingfishers and langur monkeys in the trees below. Photographers favor the downstream side at sunrise when mist rises from the water. Short trails lead down to riverside picnic spots where locals fish with bamboo poles. If time allows, continue a few kilometers upstream to a small chorten marking an old trade route.
Local Context
The bridge sits near farming villages that grow rice, oranges, and cardamom. Stopping at a roadside stall lets visitors sample fresh produce and learn about seasonal harvests directly from growers.
How to Get There
Most visitors arrive by private car or hired driver from Thimphu, a scenic four-hour drive through the Dochula Pass and then south toward Dagana. Those coming from the Indian border at Phuentsholing can reach the bridge in roughly two hours via the Punaltsangchhu valley road. Public buses between Thimphu and Dagana town stop at the nearby village; from there a short walk or taxi ride reaches the bridge viewpoint.
Best Time to Visit
October through April offers the clearest skies and comfortable temperatures. The post-monsoon months of October and November bring golden rice fields and fewer clouds. Avoid July and August when heavy rains can make the river swell and trails slippery.
