Why Coppo Francesco Stands Out
Coppo Francesco rises in the central Apennines of Abruzzo, offering hikers a peaceful alternative to busier peaks like Corno Grande. Its rounded summit and surrounding ridges deliver long views across the Velino-Sirente plateau and distant snow-capped ranges without the crowds.
Getting There
Base yourself in the villages of Rocca di Cambio or Ovindoli, both reached by regional train to L’Aquila followed by a short bus or taxi. From either town a signed trailhead lies a 15-minute drive away on narrow mountain roads; parking is available at the start of the forest track. No public transport reaches the trailhead directly, so a rental car or pre-arranged transfer works best.
Recommended Hikes
Loop via the Beech Woods
A classic 8 km circuit climbs gently through ancient beech forest before emerging onto open pasture. Allow four to five hours for the round trip, with steady elevation gain of roughly 600 m.
Summit Ridge Traverse
Experienced walkers can extend the route along the main ridge toward nearby Colle del Naso for an additional two hours of panoramic walking. The terrain is rocky but non-technical; GPS tracks help on the less-marked sections.
Flora, Fauna and Scenery
Spring brings carpets of wild narcissus and gentians; autumn turns the beech canopy golden. Look for Apennine wolves, golden eagles and chamois on the higher slopes. Clear days reveal the Gran Sasso’s distinctive profile to the northeast and the Maiella massif to the southeast.
Best Time to Visit
Late May through early October offers reliable snow-free access. July and August bring warm days but occasional thunderstorms; shoulder months of June and September provide cooler temperatures and fewer visitors. Winter snowshoeing is possible for those with experience and proper equipment, though avalanche risk exists on steeper faces.
Nearby Attractions
Combine a visit with the historic center of Sulmona, the alpine meadows of Campo Felice, or the medieval hill town of Santo Stefano di Sessanio. All lie within a 45-minute drive.
