La Solagna: Hiking Abruzzo’s Quiet Gran Sasso Summit
La Solagna rises above the high plateaus of central Abruzzo, delivering wide Apennine views and uncrowded trails inside…
A low-key mountain summit offering sweeping Apennine views and peaceful trails just outside L'Aquila.
Colle Tondo rises modestly above the rolling plateaus of Abruzzo, offering hikers a direct route into the region’s limestone landscapes without the crowds that gather on Gran Sasso’s higher ridges. From its open summit, the eye travels across the Campo Imperatore plain to the jagged profile of Corno Grande and, on clear days, toward the Adriatic. The mountain’s gentle northern slopes support beech woods that give way to alpine meadows dotted with gentians and orchids in early summer.
Most visitors reach Colle Tondo by car from L’Aquila, roughly 25 minutes via the SS17 toward Pizzoli and then a short climb on the SP1 to the trailhead at Fonte Rionne. Those without a vehicle can take the regional train to L’Aquila and connect with the infrequent bus toward Barete, alighting at the last stop and walking the final three kilometers uphill. A small parking area at the trailhead accommodates day visitors; arrive early on weekends to secure space.
Late May through early October provides the most reliable weather for hiking. Snow lingers into April on north-facing gullies, while late-autumn storms can arrive suddenly. Summer mornings are cool at elevation, but afternoon thunderstorms are common in July and August; start early and descend before midday heat builds on the exposed limestone.
The standard ascent follows a well-marked path through beech forest that opens onto grassy slopes after 45 minutes. The final ridge walk is straightforward but rocky; allow two hours round-trip from the trailhead for the 400-meter elevation gain. Photographers favor the summit at sunrise when the Gran Sasso massif glows pink. Birdwatchers may spot golden eagles circling the higher crags and, lower down, rock partridges calling from the scrub. In late spring the meadows host chamois that descend from Gran Sasso’s core zone.
Combine a morning on Colle Tondo with an afternoon tasting pecorino and ventricina salami in nearby villages for a complete Abruzzo day.

Yes, the main trail is short and non-technical, though the rocky upper section requires steady footing; children and fit older adults manage it comfortably in good weather.
Dogs are permitted but must remain on leash near grazing livestock; bring waste bags as there are no bins at the trailhead.
Wild camping is tolerated for one night provided you leave no trace and stay below the summit ridge; permanent bivouacs are not allowed.
Golden eagles, chamois, and Apennine wolves inhabit the broader area, though sightings are uncommon during daylight hours on the main path.
A seasonal spring flows near the forest edge in spring and early summer; carry sufficient water after July when it often dries.
