La Pacima: Hiking Abruzzo’s Quiet Apennine Summit
A lesser-known peak in the central Apennines offering uncrowded trails and sweeping views across Abruzzo’s high plateaus…
Trek to sweeping Apennine views on this little-known peak near L’Aquila.
Colle Sant’Agostino rises quietly above the rolling plateaus west of L’Aquila, offering hikers an uncrowded alternative to the better-known Gran Sasso and Maiella massifs. Its open summit delivers 360-degree panoramas that stretch from the Velino-Sirente chain to the distant Adriatic on clear days. Because the mountain sits at moderate altitude, it remains accessible for most of the year while still feeling remote.
The main route begins from a small parking area along the SP5 near the hamlet of San Giovanni. A well-marked path climbs steadily through beech woodland before emerging onto limestone meadows dotted with orchids in late spring. The final section is a gentle ridge walk that rewards with unobstructed views of Monte Velino’s jagged profile. Most visitors complete the round-trip in three to four hours, making it ideal for a half-day outing.
From Rome, take the A24 motorway toward L’Aquila and exit at Tornimparte. Continue west on the SP5 for about 15 minutes; a signed pull-off marks the trailhead. Public transport is limited, so a rental car or taxi from L’Aquila station is the practical choice. Once at the trailhead, the path is clearly indicated by red-and-white CAI markers.
Late May through early October offers the most reliable weather and wildflower displays. Summer mornings are cool at elevation, while September brings golden light and fewer insects. Winter snow can linger on the upper slopes, requiring crampons or skis; check conditions with local refuges before attempting the route outside the main season.
Combine the hike with a visit to the medieval village of Santo Stefano di Sessanio, 25 minutes away, or continue to the Campo Felice plateau for its dramatic karst landscape. The nearby Ocre-Croce di Santo Spirito trail network provides additional shorter walks for those wanting more time on the hills.
Look for Apennine chamois on distant slopes and golden eagles overhead. In spring the meadows host rare species such as the Abruzzo gentian and several endemic orchids. Staying on marked paths helps protect these fragile habitats.
