Le Macchie: Hiking Abruzzo’s Quiet Apennine Summit
Tranquil trails, sweeping views over the Apennines, and rare wildlife define this little-visited mountain in Italy’s…
Experience panoramic Apennine views and peaceful trails on this accessible peak near Teramo.
Colle San Marco rises gently above the rolling hills of western Abruzzo, offering hikers a rewarding yet uncrowded alternative to the busier Gran Sasso massif. At roughly 1,100 meters, its rounded summit delivers sweeping vistas across the Vomano valley toward the Monti della Laga and, on clear days, the distant Adriatic coast. The mountain’s appeal lies in its quiet beech and oak woods, spring wildflower meadows, and easy-to-moderate trails that suit both day hikers and families.
The trailhead is reached by car via the SS80 from Teramo or the SP24 from Montorio al Vomano. From either town allow 25–35 minutes of winding ascent through olive groves and small hamlets. Limited parking sits at the Colle San Marco pass; arrive early on weekends. No regular public transport reaches the start, so a rental car or taxi from Teramo station is the most practical option.
Late spring through early autumn provides the most comfortable conditions. May and June bring blooming orchids and gentians; September and October offer golden beech foliage and fewer insects. Winter snow can close the upper tracks, though snowshoeing is possible with local guides when conditions are stable.
The classic 7 km circuit starts at the pass, climbs steadily through mixed forest, and reaches the open summit meadow in 1.5–2 hours. The final stretch is a gentle grassy ridge with 360-degree views. Total elevation gain is about 350 m, suitable for fit walkers.
Families or those with less time can follow the wide gravel track that circles the lower slopes for an easy 4 km out-and-back with constant valley views.
Listen for the call of the hoopoe in spring and watch for red deer at dawn or dusk. The limestone soils support rare Apennine species including the protected Apennine edelweiss and several orchid varieties.
Combine your hike with a visit to the medieval village of Castelli, known for its historic majolica pottery workshops, or the dramatic gorges of the Valle del Vomano. Both lie within a 30-minute drive and provide cultural contrast to the mountain scenery.
