Cima Campuna: Hiking Abruzzo’s Quiet Apennine Summit
A rewarding climb through beech woods and alpine meadows to sweeping views across the Gran Sasso and Monti della Laga…
A rewarding day hike in the central Apennines offering sweeping views across Gran Sasso and the Monti della Laga.
Colle Lungo rises quietly in the Abruzzo Apennines, offering hikers a less-crowded alternative to the better-known peaks of Gran Sasso. Its open ridges deliver wide views over the Campo Imperatore plateau and the Laga mountains without requiring technical climbing skills. The mountain sits inside the Gran Sasso e Monti della Laga National Park, where beech forests give way to high pastures dotted with wildflowers in summer.
The most practical approach is by car from the A24 motorway. Exit at Assergi or Fonte Cerreto and continue on the SP1 or SP8 toward the hamlet of Fonte Cerreto or Pietracamela. From there, signed trails lead upward through mixed woodland. Public transport reaches nearby villages only sporadically, so most visitors rent a vehicle or join a guided transfer from L’Aquila or Teramo. Parking is available at trailheads below the main ridge.
Late May through October offers the most reliable conditions for hiking. Snow lingers into early June on north-facing slopes, while July and August bring warm days but occasional thunderstorms. September and early October provide clear air and fewer visitors. Winter ascents are possible for experienced mountaineers with crampons and ice axes, yet the route is not maintained for casual winter use.
Above the treeline, summer meadows host Apennine edelweiss, gentians and orchids. Chamois and golden eagles are regularly sighted on the higher slopes. The limestone terrain creates dramatic karst formations and small seasonal springs that hikers should treat before drinking.
After descending, many visitors continue to the historic village of Santo Stefano di Sessanio or the fortress town of Castel del Monte. The cable car at Fonte Cerreto provides access to Campo Imperatore for those wanting to extend the day into the high plain. L’Aquila, thirty minutes away by road, offers museums and restaurants for an overnight stay.
