Colle Jovana Vecchia: Hiking Abruzzo’s Quiet Apennine Summit

A rewarding day hike through beech forests to sweeping views of central Italy's wildest mountain ranges.

AbruzzoUpdated 20 August 2026

Why Visit Colle Jovana Vecchia

Colle Jovana Vecchia rises in the Simbruini Mountains of Abruzzo, offering hikers a quieter alternative to the better-known Gran Sasso or Maiella massifs. Its slopes support old-growth beech woods that shelter Apennine wolves, golden eagles, and rare orchids. From the rounded summit, clear days reveal the Fucino plain to the north and the snow-streaked ridges of the Abruzzo National Park to the south.

How to Get There

Most visitors arrive by car from Rome via the A24 motorway, exiting at Avezzano and continuing on the SS83 through the Vallelonga. A narrow paved road climbs to the Collelongo trailhead at roughly 1,200 meters; parking is available beside a small forestry hut. Public transport is limited, so arrange a return taxi or join an organized hike from Pescasseroli or Opi.

Best Time to Visit

Late spring through early autumn provides the most reliable conditions. Snow lingers into May on north-facing slopes, while July and August bring warm but manageable temperatures at altitude. Autumn colors peak in October, and winter visits require crampons and avalanche awareness.

Things to Do

The standard route follows a well-marked path through beech forest for two hours to the summit cross. Extend the day by continuing along the ridge toward Monte Cotento or descending to the Grotta di Collelongo karst cave. Birdwatchers should carry binoculars for sightings of short-toed eagles circling the open meadows.

Nearby Attractions

Combine the hike with a visit to the medieval village of Pescasseroli, home to the Abruzzo National Park visitor center, or continue south to the clear waters of Lago di Barrea. The ancient Samnite site of Alfedena lies a short drive away for those interested in pre-Roman history.

Visitor tips

  • Carry at least two liters of water per person; the upper trail has no reliable springs after June.
  • Download an offline map such as Komoot or Gaia GPS, as mobile coverage drops above the tree line.
  • Start early to avoid afternoon thunderstorms common in the Apennines from June through September.
