La Solagna: Hiking Abruzzo’s Quiet Gran Sasso Summit
La Solagna rises above the high plateaus of central Abruzzo, delivering wide Apennine views and uncrowded trails inside…
A rewarding mountain escape in the Monti della Laga range offering sweeping views and uncrowded trails.
Colle di Traglia rises in the Monti della Laga range of Abruzzo, delivering a genuine mountain experience without the crowds that gather on more famous peaks. Its slopes are covered in beech forest that turns brilliant gold in autumn, while the summit opens onto panoramic views across the Gran Sasso massif and the Lazio border hills. The area remains largely undeveloped, making it ideal for hikers seeking solitude and clear air.
The mountain lies southeast of Amatrice and is reached by narrow provincial roads from the SS4 Salaria. Drivers typically park at the small hamlet of Colle di Traglia or slightly higher trailheads near the forest edge. From Rome the journey takes roughly two hours; from L’Aquila or Teramo allow about ninety minutes. Public transport is limited, so a car or pre-arranged transfer is essential.
Late spring through early autumn offers the most reliable conditions for walking. Snow lingers into May on north-facing slopes, while summer brings warm days but cool nights at elevation. October rewards visitors with vivid foliage and fewer people. Winter visits are possible only with proper equipment and avalanche awareness.
The main ascent follows a well-marked path through beech woods that opens onto grassy ridges. Allow four to five hours for the round trip from the hamlet, including time at the summit cross. Several variant loops connect to nearby saddles for longer days. Carry the CAI 1:25,000 map or a reliable GPS track.
Watch for red deer at dawn, golden eagles overhead, and endemic Abruzzo chamois on distant crags. The undergrowth hosts rare orchids in May and June. The silence is broken only by wind and birdsong, one of the area’s greatest assets.
Combine the hike with a visit to the medieval village of Amatrice for its famous pasta or continue north to the high plateaus of Campo Imperatore. The nearby Monti della Laga National Park visitor centre provides further trail information and local produce.
