Colle della Chiusa: Hiking the Quiet Mountain Pass in Abruzzo

Explore the forested slopes and panoramic trails of this lesser-known peak in Abruzzo’s central highlands.
Colle delle Pianelle rises gently above the rolling plateaus of Abruzzo, offering hikers a quiet alternative to busier peaks in the Gran Sasso massif. Its broad, grassy summit and surrounding beech woods deliver sweeping views across the Aterno valley toward the Maiella massif on clear days. The mountain’s moderate elevation and network of old shepherd paths make it ideal for half-day outings that still feel remote.
The trailhead is reached by narrow provincial roads from the village of Pizzoli or the town of L’Aquila. Drivers park in a small gravel area beside the SP1; from there a signed track climbs steadily through mixed woodland. Public transport is limited, so most visitors rent a car or join a local guide from L’Aquila. The final approach is on foot only, preserving the mountain’s peaceful character.
Late spring through early autumn provides the most reliable conditions. Wildflowers carpet the meadows in May and June, while September brings cooler temperatures and fewer insects. Winter visits are possible for experienced walkers with snowshoes, but the upper slopes can ice over quickly after storms.
After descending, continue to the medieval hill town of Santo Stefano di Sessanio for stone architecture and local lentil dishes, or drive north to the Campo Imperatore plateau for dramatic high-plateau scenery. Both sites lie within a 45-minute drive and pair naturally with a day on Colle delle Pianelle.
