Colle dei Liscari: Hiking Abruzzo’s Quiet Apennine Summit

This understated peak near the Sagittario Valley rewards hikers with broad views across Abruzzo’s central mountains and unspoiled beech woods.

Why Visit Colle dei Liscari

Colle dei Liscari rises gently above the Sagittario Valley, offering a quieter alternative to the better-known Gran Sasso and Maiella massifs. Its rounded summit provides 360-degree panoramas that stretch from the snow-streaked ridges of the central Apennines to the green plateaus of the Abruzzo National Park. Because the mountain sits slightly off the main tourist routes, visitors often have the trails to themselves even on summer weekends.

Trails and What to Expect

The most direct route starts from a small parking area along the SP5 road between Anversa degli Abruzzi and Villalago. A well-marked path climbs steadily through mixed beech and oak forest before emerging onto open meadows rich with wildflowers in late spring. The final section crosses limestone slabs to the modest cairn marking the summit. Most hikers complete the round-trip in three to four hours, gaining roughly 500 meters of elevation. Side trails branch off toward nearby Colle del Prete, allowing stronger walkers to extend the day into a longer loop.

Wildlife and Seasons

Keep an eye out for golden eagles circling overhead and, in quieter corners, signs of Apennine wolves and chamois. Spring brings carpets of narcissus and gentian; autumn colors the beech woods gold and orange. Winter covers the upper slopes in snow, turning the mountain into a destination for experienced ski mountaineers only.

Getting There and Getting Around

Reach the trailhead by car from Sulmona in about 40 minutes via the SS479 and SP5. Public transport is limited; the nearest train station is in Sulmona, from which a local bus runs to Anversa degli Abruzzi, leaving a 5-kilometer walk or taxi ride to the start. Once on the mountain, no facilities exist, so carry all supplies. Nearby villages such as Scanno and Villalago offer cafés and small museums for a post-hike stop.

Best Time to Visit

Late May through early October provides the most reliable weather and snow-free trails. July and August can be warm at midday, so early starts are advisable. Shoulder months of June and September deliver fewer visitors and pleasant temperatures.

Visitor tips

  • Park only in designated pull-offs along the SP5 to avoid blocking narrow roads used by locals.
  • Carry at least two liters of water per person; no springs flow reliably above the tree line after June.
  • Download an offline map before setting outu2014mobile coverage fades quickly once you leave the valley road.
