Cima Campuna: Hiking Abruzzo’s Quiet Apennine Summit
A rewarding climb through beech woods and alpine meadows to sweeping views across the Gran Sasso and Monti della Laga…
Cima Faiete delivers rewarding ridge walks and broad Apennine vistas within Italy's Gran Sasso e Monti della Laga National Park.
Situated in the Monti della Laga range of Abruzzo, Cima Faiete rises as a less-crowded alternative to the better-known Gran Sasso peaks. Its open slopes and rocky crest provide clear sightlines across the park’s beech forests, high plateaus, and distant snow-capped summits without the heavy foot traffic found elsewhere.
Most routes begin from trailheads near the village of Pietracamela or the high meadows of Prati di Tivo. Hikers follow well-marked paths that climb steadily through mixed woodland before emerging onto grassy ridges. The final approach involves straightforward scrambling over limestone blocks to the summit cairn. In clear weather the panorama includes the entire Gran Sasso massif to the south and the rolling hills of the Teramo plain to the east.
Late spring through early autumn offers the most reliable conditions. Snow lingers into May on north-facing slopes, while July and August bring warm days ideal for ridge walking. Early autumn rewards visitors with turning beech leaves and fewer insects. Winter visits require mountaineering equipment and local guidance due to avalanche risk and route-finding challenges.
Travelers reach the area via the A24 motorway, exiting at Teramo or Assergi, then following winding provincial roads toward the park. Public buses run from L’Aquila to nearby villages, though most hikers arrive by car and park at established trailheads. From Rome the drive takes roughly two hours under normal traffic.
Combine a Cima Faiete hike with visits to the medieval hill town of Santo Stefano di Sessanio or the high plain of Campo Imperatore. The nearby village of Castel del Monte offers stone architecture and local pecorino cheese producers. For longer stays, the national park visitor center at Assergi provides maps and information on additional trails throughout the Monti della Laga.
