Koh Kong Island: Cambodia’s Remote Jungle-Beach Escape
Discover pristine sands, clear waters, and Cardamom Mountain views on this little-visited island off Cambodia’s…
Chhay Chrei Rapid offers cool jungle pools and quiet cascades for travelers seeking an authentic natural experience in Cambodia's remote southwest.
Chhay Chrei Rapid sits deep within Koh Kong Province, where clear water tumbles over layered rock into natural swimming holes surrounded by dense forest. Unlike more developed sites, this rapid keeps a wild character that rewards visitors who arrive prepared for basic conditions and variable water levels.
Most travelers start from Koh Kong town. The journey involves a mix of sealed road and laterite track that can become slippery after rain; four-wheel-drive vehicles or motorbike taxis are common choices. Some visitors arrange a boat transfer along the river before a short walk to the site. Allow at least ninety minutes each way and inform a local lodge of your plans so someone knows your route.
The cooler months from November through February bring lower humidity and more reliable access along the tracks. Water flow remains steady from upstream rains without the heavy flooding of the wet season. Early morning arrivals let you enjoy the pools before any day-trippers appear.
Follow the short trail from the parking area to the main cascade. Several rock ledges create tiered pools suitable for wading or swimming; the upper pools tend to be deeper and cooler. Bring a picnic and spend time listening to the forest sounds while watching for kingfishers and butterflies. A gentle scramble upstream reveals smaller rapids and shaded banks ideal for resting. Those with more energy can follow faint paths into the surrounding forest for birdwatching, though guides are recommended for longer hikes.
Facilities are minimal, so carry plenty of water, snacks, insect repellent, and a basic first-aid kit. Sturdy footwear helps on wet rocks, and quick-dry clothing is useful if you plan to swim. Respect the site by taking all rubbish with you; there are no waste facilities.

The pools are generally calm enough for swimming when water levels are moderate, but avoid the main cascade after heavy rain when currents strengthen. Always test depth first and supervise children closely.
Most visitors stay two to three hours, enough time for swimming, photos, and a relaxed picnic before the return journey.
A guide is not strictly required if you have clear directions and a sturdy vehicle, but hiring one reduces the risk of getting lost on side tracks and supports the local community.
Pack drinking water, snacks, sunscreen, insect repellent, a towel, and sturdy shoes. There are no shops or facilities on site.
Informal camping is sometimes possible on higher ground, but check with your Koh Kong accommodation first and leave no trace of your stay.
