Cabeza Torrexón rises sharply above the green valleys of eastern Asturias, offering hikers a compact yet rewarding ascent with 360-degree vistas that stretch from the Picos de Europa to the Cantabrian Sea. Its limestone slopes support beech woods and limestone pavements that bloom with wildflowers in spring, while the summit itself provides an exposed platform for watching changing weather over the coast.
Reaching the Trailhead
Most visitors approach from the village of Llanes, a 25-minute drive inland via the AS-115 and local roads to the hamlet of Valles. From there a signed track leads to a small parking area at roughly 400 m elevation. Public transport reaches Llanes easily by bus or train from Oviedo or Gijón; hikers then connect by taxi or the regional FEVE train to the nearest stop at Posada before walking or hitching the final kilometres.
The Route to the Summit
The standard path climbs steadily through mixed woodland before emerging onto open pasture and rocky ribs. The round-trip distance is approximately 9 km with 650 m of elevation gain, taking three to four hours for fit walkers. Near the top the trail threads between limestone outcrops; sure footing and a head for heights are useful on the final scramble. On clear days the summit reveals the entire eastern Asturian coastline and, to the south, the jagged profile of the Picos de Europa.
Best Time to Visit
Late spring through early autumn offers the most reliable weather and longest daylight. May and June bring fresh green growth and fewer crowds, while September often delivers crisp air and fewer afternoon thunderstorms. Winter visits are possible only with mountaineering experience and snow equipment, as the upper slopes can hold ice for weeks.
