Bonifanti Viewpoint: Panoramic Calabria Over the Tyrrhenian Sea

A quiet hilltop perch near Scalea offering sweeping coastal views and a taste of authentic Calabrian countryside.

CalabriaUpdated 19 October 2026

Why Bonifanti Stands Out

Bonifanti Viewpoint sits on a modest rise above the northern Calabrian coast, delivering unobstructed sightlines across the Tyrrhenian Sea to the distant Aeolian Islands on clear days. Unlike busier lookouts along the Amalfi Coast, this spot remains largely local, framed by olive groves and scattered farmhouses rather than crowds or railings.

What to See and Do

Arrive early to watch fishing boats head out from nearby Scalea harbor while the morning light hits the cliffs. The main viewing area is a small, flat clearing where visitors can picnic on low stone walls. On the western side, a short footpath leads a few hundred meters to a secondary knoll with a slightly different angle toward the Gulf of Policastro. Wild thyme and rosemary line the trail, scenting the air in spring and autumn.

Photography Tips

Telephoto lenses capture the layered ridges of the Pollino Massif to the north, while wide-angle shots emphasize the curve of the coastline. Golden hour in late afternoon brings warm tones across the water and highlights the terracotta roofs of villages below.

How to Reach Bonifanti

From Scalea, follow the SP1 coastal road south for about eight kilometers, then turn inland onto the narrow Via Bonifanti. The final stretch is a single-lane gravel track best suited to standard cars in dry weather. Park where the track widens near an old stone farmhouse; the viewpoint lies a five-minute walk farther uphill.

Best Time to Visit

Spring (April–June) and autumn (September–October) offer mild temperatures and fewer insects. Summer brings intense sun and occasional haze, while winter can deliver crisp air and occasional snow on distant peaks, though the access track may become muddy.

Nearby Attractions

  • Scalea’s historic old town with its Norman tower and small archaeological museum.
  • The pebble beaches and sea caves at Praia a Mare, twenty minutes south.
  • The ancient ruins and panoramic monastery at Santa Maria della Grotta above Diamante.

Combine a morning at Bonifanti with lunch in one of Scalea’s family-run trattorias serving fresh anchovies and eggplant dishes.

Visitor tips

  • Bring sturdy shoes for the short unpaved path and plenty of water; there are no facilities at the viewpoint itself.
  • Check weather forecasts for haze or strong winds before heading up, as both can reduce visibility across the sea.
  • Visit on weekdays to avoid occasional local weekend picnickers and enjoy the quietest experience.
