Beng Molong: A Tranquil Lakeside Escape in Cambodia’s Kampong Cham Province
Discover the peaceful waters and rural charm of Beng Molong, a hidden lake offering authentic local experiences away…
A peaceful freshwater lake surrounded by farmland and villages where visitors can experience rural Cambodian life away from the Mekong crowds.
Beng Tuol Anteas is a modest natural lake set among the flat rice fields and palm groves of Kampong Cham Province. Its calm waters reflect the surrounding countryside, creating a tranquil setting for slow travel. Unlike the busy riverbanks of the Mekong, the lake remains largely local, offering a genuine glimpse of daily life in eastern Cambodia.
Early mornings bring mist over the water and the chance to watch villagers fishing from small wooden boats or collecting lotus stems. The shoreline is dotted with simple wooden platforms used by locals; visitors are welcome to sit quietly and observe without disturbing routines. Birdlife is modest but steady, with herons and egrets often visible along the reeds. In the dry season the water level drops, revealing muddy margins where children sometimes play or fly kites.
Walking or cycling the narrow dirt tracks around the lake gives access to nearby hamlets. Farmers grow rice, mangoes, and longans; a polite request usually earns permission to walk the edges of the fields. The flat terrain makes cycling easy even in moderate heat.
The lake lies roughly 15 kilometres southeast of Kampong Cham town. Most travellers hire a motorbike taxi or tuk-tuk for a half-day excursion. The final stretch is on unpaved roads that can become rutted after heavy rain, so drivers familiar with the route are recommended. Those with their own transport should carry a paper map or offline GPS, as signage is minimal.
The cool-dry months from November to February offer the most comfortable temperatures and clearest skies. April and May bring intense heat but also fewer visitors. The rainy season (June–October) turns surrounding fields green and the lake fuller, yet roads may be muddy and mosquitoes more active.
Combine a lake visit with the historic Wat Nokor Bachey or the riverside market in Kampong Cham town. Phnom Pros and Phnom Srei hills lie farther west and make an easy additional stop for those with a full day. The lake itself rewards unhurried exploration rather than rushed sightseeing.
