Beng Molong: A Tranquil Lakeside Escape in Cambodia’s Kampong Cham Province
Discover the peaceful waters and rural charm of Beng Molong, a hidden lake offering authentic local experiences away…
A serene freshwater lake surrounded by rural villages and rice fields, Beng Phsa offers visitors a peaceful glimpse of everyday Cambodian countryside life.
Located in Kampong Cham Province, Beng Phsa is a modest but scenic freshwater lake that remains largely off the main tourist trail. Its calm waters and surrounding flat landscape of paddy fields and small hamlets provide a tranquil setting for those seeking to escape the bustle of Cambodia’s more famous destinations.
Boating is the most popular activity. Local fishermen often offer short trips across the lake, allowing visitors to watch waterbirds, observe traditional fishing methods, and enjoy the reflection of the sky on the water’s surface. Early morning visits reveal mist rising from the lake and the sounds of village life beginning.
Walking or cycling around the shoreline offers another perspective. Narrow paths lead through rice paddies and past wooden stilt houses where residents grow vegetables and raise ducks. The flat terrain makes cycling easy, and the rural setting gives a genuine sense of provincial Cambodia.
Although not a major reserve, Beng Phsa attracts migratory and resident birds, especially during the cooler months. Bring binoculars for sightings of herons, egrets, and kingfishers. The surrounding vegetation supports dragonflies and butterflies, making the lake a pleasant spot for simple nature observation.
Most travelers reach Beng Phsa from Kampong Cham town by motorbike, tuk-tuk, or hired car. The journey passes through typical lowland countryside. From Phnom Penh, the drive takes roughly two hours via National Road 6 and then smaller provincial roads. Public transport is limited, so arranging a driver for the day is the most practical option.
The dry season from November to April offers the most comfortable conditions, with lower water levels and clearer skies. The wet season brings lush greenery but can make access roads muddy and limit boat movement. Early mornings and late afternoons provide the best light and cooler temperatures for outdoor activities.
Combine a visit with stops along the Mekong River in Kampong Cham town, known for its riverside promenade and ferry crossings to nearby islands. Rubber plantations and small temples in the surrounding districts add variety to a full-day itinerary without requiring long travel times.
