South Gate Angkor Thom: Cambodia’s Majestic Monumental Gateway
The South Gate offers a striking introduction to the ancient walled city of Angkor Thom through its iconic face towers…
Float above the iconic towers and jungle-clad ruins of Angkor Wat for unforgettable aerial perspectives.
The Angkor Balloon offers one of the most peaceful ways to appreciate the vast scale of the Angkor Archaeological Park. Rather than navigating crowded temple paths on foot, visitors rise gently above the treetops to see how the ancient Khmer city was laid out across the landscape. The ride reveals the symmetry of Angkor Wat, the sprawling moats, and the dense forest that still conceals many smaller ruins.
Passengers board a large tethered balloon that ascends slowly to roughly 150 meters. Because the balloon remains anchored, the flight feels stable and quiet, with no engine noise to disturb the view. On clear mornings the light turns the sandstone temples golden; in the late afternoon the same structures cast long shadows across the water. The entire experience lasts about 15 minutes once airborne, giving ample time to photograph the main temple and surrounding features without rushing.
The cooler months from November to February bring the clearest skies and most comfortable temperatures for an early-morning ascent. Sunrise flights capture the temples in soft light before tour buses arrive. Avoid the peak heat of March to May, when haze can reduce visibility, and note that monsoon rains from June to October sometimes ground the balloon for safety.
The launch site sits just outside the main Angkor ticket checkpoint on the road between Siem Reap town and Angkor Wat. Most visitors arrange transport through their hotel or a local driver; the short ride from central Siem Reap takes 15 to 20 minutes. Because the balloon operates within the park, an Angkor pass is required for entry on the same day. Combine the flight with a temple visit by scheduling it first thing in the morning or just before sunset.
After the balloon ride, continue to Angkor Wat itself for ground-level exploration of its bas-reliefs. The nearby Angkor Thom complex with the Bayon faces and the jungle temple of Ta Prohm are both within a 15-minute drive, making it easy to create a full-day itinerary that balances aerial and on-site perspectives.

Flights are canceled in high winds or heavy rain; operators usually offer a full refund or reschedule within the same ticket validity period.
The Angkor pass grants park entry, but the balloon ride requires its own ticket purchased at the launch site or in advance.
