A rewarding ridge walk through meadows and beech woods to panoramic views across eastern Asturias and the Picos de Europa.
Alto de Llerandi, also known locally as Cabezón, rises above the village of Llerandi in the municipality of Parres. The 822-metre summit offers hikers an accessible yet uncrowded escape into the rolling hills that separate the Cantabrian coast from the high Picos de Europa.
Unlike the crowded trails inside the national park, this peak sits in quieter countryside. On clear days the 360-degree view takes in the limestone towers of the Picos, the green valleys of the Sella and Piloña rivers, and, on the northern horizon, the Bay of Biscay. Spring brings carpets of wild daffodils and gentians; autumn colours the beech woods gold and red.
The most popular approach starts from the hamlet of Llerandi itself. A well-marked track climbs steadily through pastures and mixed woodland before emerging onto open ridge. The final section is a gentle scramble over limestone pavement to the trig point and summit cross. Most walkers complete the round trip in three to four hours. A longer variant links the peak with neighbouring Alto del Sueve, adding another two hours of ridge walking.
Look for griffon vultures circling overhead and, in the meadows, the small Asturian horses known as asturcones. In late summer the slopes are dotted with heather and bilberry bushes.
April through June and September through October provide the most comfortable temperatures and clearest views. July and August can be humid; winter visits are possible but require micro-spikes after snowfall.
From Oviedo or Gijón take the A-8 motorway east to the Arriondas exit, then the AS-342 and local roads to Llerandi. Parking is available beside the village church. No public transport reaches the trailhead, so a car or taxi from Arriondas is necessary.
